Clubs and Activities

Clubs meetings are scheduled after school. The day and time that a club meets will be agreed upon by the advisor and students. The type and number of clubs to be sponsored by the school are determined by the interests of the students. To start a new club, interested students must secure a minimum of fifteen names on a petition and present it to the Principal for consideration.

All School Production

The goal is to produce a successful, artistic and entertaining musical each spring. The All-School Production plans to continue the tradition of creating a student-centered production by integrating students into the various aspects of theatre. These areas include: performing, lighting, backstage responsibilities, set design, and sound tech. It is also a goal of this club to work with other clubs and organizations to craft a show that is truly an All-School Production

Art Club

Students in this organization will be afforded the opportunity to demonstrate their creative ability in the form of arts and crafts. Students will learn different techniques and combine this learning with their natural ability and interest.

Band

The band is an instrumental performing ensemble which meets daily and performs a wide variety of music from standards classics and pop, to modern concert band pieces. The Band offers students the opportunity to acquire valuable experience as an ensemble player as well as a solo performer. Band members must be available to march in parades, participate in concerts and compete in inter-district competitions. This club is open to all students.

Band Front - Color Guard

Color Guard is a visual expression of music through the use of dance, flags, mock rifles and sabers. Color Guard is a group of unified performers doing routines choreographed to live or prerecorded music. This is a year round activity and open to all students.

Business Honor Society

Members of this organization pledge a lifelong commitment to foster business scholarship, the promotion of positive ethics, the advancement of civic and social responsibility and the welfare and prosperity of our communities.

Cake Decorating

Students will learn a wide range of confectionary skills through hands-on experiences. Students will learn skills involved on making cake presentations that are creative, festive and detailed.

Chess Club

Students will gain an increased knowledge and understanding of the game Chess for its own sake as an art and as an intellectual sport. The LRHS Chess Club seeks to foster the development of its members as Chess players and their appreciation of “The Royal Game”.

Co-ed Coders and Girls Who Code

These Clubs are designed to increase interest in computer science and to provide opportunities to both collaborate and learn. Members of the club include people who have little or no experience with coding and who would like to learn how to code, as well as, experienced coders. Members work on projects that they select and use one another as resources to learn new material.

Class Council

Class Council is a branch of the Student Council. Class Council gives students the opportunities to act as leaders for their peers, collaborate with faculty, hold fundraisers and after school activities and organize events for their classmates. Students plan and schedule different fundraisers for each year they are in high school. The class Council is responsible for planning the Junior Formal, Senior Prom, Field Day, the senior trip and to assist with Graduation. Proceeds from the various fundraising opportunities help offset the costs for students during their senior year activities. Class Council volunteers and assists in functions like Back to School Nights, Walk-a-Thons, School Spirit Promotions, Food Drives, Blood Drives, etc…

Culinary Cooking Club

The club offers students the opportunity to practice their culinary and kitchen management skills while enjoying great food. The club meets twice a month from 2:40 p.m. to 4:00 pm. The dishes created are student directed. Members have the opportunity to develop leadership skills as each takes a turn submitting recipes and demonstrating techniques to the group. School community service opportunities is another area that students are engaged in. These include but are not limited to donating baked good to the Lakeland Coffee House and other events. Preparing, serving theme based dinners to the cast and crew of the All-School Production is another event that students prepare for. Our emphasis is on collaboration, cooperation, and creating a safe, low stress environment for self –expression and fellowship.

D.E.C.A. - Distributive Education Club of America

The DECA Club educates and prepares emerging business leaders for their college and career opportunities. DECA allows students to apply themselves to real world situations. Students learn leadership skills, problem solving abilities and the value of community service.  Students will have the ability to manage the school store as a small business.

D.E.M.- Dedication to Education in Medicine

This club gives students who are passionate or even simply thinking about a future in the medical field a unique chance to express their passion for medicine with a group of like-minded peers who want to pursue the same field. The major goal of D.E.M. is to try to prepare students interested in medicine for a career path in health related fields. Guest speakers from various fields of medicine both active and retired lecture students and share their stories. A wide array of surgical videos are viewed and discussed.

Students can be certified in CPR/First Aid and AED. The “Vial for Life” service project was introduced at the Wanaque Reserve in the past. The club is actively involved in fundraising activities for both Breast Cancer research and Cystic Fibrosis Research. Students will tour medical facilities and learn as much as possible about the medical field.

Drama Club

The goal of the Drama Club is to provide a safe space for students to explore their creativity and perform on a stage in a non-pressured environment. Throughout the year, members of the club are encouraged to challenge themselves while on stage and step outside one’s own comfort zone by participating in improvisation games, musical theater, and various performance based activities. Each spring, the Drama Club presents a student directed and produced short play.

Dungeons and Dragons Club

This club provides a space for students to interact through a game that both reinforces and teaches the skills of social collaboration, mathematics, collective storytelling, planning and organization, diplomacy, and rhetorical argument.

E.R.A.S.E. - End Racism and Sexism Everywhere

The E.R.A.S.E. Organization is dedicated to ending racism and sexism at our school, in our community, and in our society. The activities include sensitivity programs for members and developing programs for LRHS. All students are encouraged to join.

FBLA - Future Business Leaders of America

This club inspires and prepares students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences. FBLA programs focus on: leadership development, academic competitions, membership benefits and community service. Students will have the ability to manage the school store as a small business.

Fishing Club

This club brings together all students who have a passion for the outdoors and fishing. The club will travel to a variety of sites in norther New Jersey that allow fishing. They will learning a variety of fishing techniques as well as rules and regulations pertaining to fishing. The club will help students learn about the importance of preserving the environment and will allow them to connect with the rhythms of nature. Club members will share their experiences and skills in fishing with other members. The club will provide an opportunity for friendships to be formed with like fishing enthusiasts.

French Club

The club meets bi-weekly to provide cultural enrichment for students of French at all levels. By various authentic cultural activities, student are exposed to the cultures of France and other French speaking countries. (This year r2020-21, such activities are no feasible in the classroom setting.)The French Club encourages building a small community of those with common interests in French in a variety of grades and levels of study.

Journalism Club

The mission of the club is to have students take an investigative look into their world. A goal of honing research skills and answering questions about current events and how they impact our lives is part of the core of this club. Student reporters will improve their journalism skills while “digging deeper” and “following the money”. The club promotes speaking, writing, listening and research skills while enjoying news topics of interest.

L.A.S.O. - Latin American Student Organization

This club is dedicated to the appreciation of Latino culture and improving cultural communication between students, staff, faculty, and the community. LASO strengthens Latino students by bridging the gap between monolingual and bilingual students. LASO helps strengthen student cultural identity through holding two meetings per month community service tasks, fundraisers and celebratory events. Club leadership is voted on by members of the club. The club is open to all students and builds bonds between the LRHS student body by recognizing cultural similarities and differences. LASO provides academic support through Peer to peer tutoring, and provides a student friendly environment for those looking to further their language and cultural career options.

Literature and Cinema Club

The club links similarities between films and the lite4rature that inspired it. Literature and corresponding films examine plot, character, setting, dialogue, and symbolism to see how each was interpreted in the two forms. Similarities and differences are discussed and analyzed.

Math League

This club is intended to spur interest in mathematics and develop problem solving skills through the excitement of friend competition in a timed format. In order to challenge students at all grade levels, with varied abilities, the problems range from relatively easy problems to those which are extremely difficult. Ninth graders often participate in a separate league from students in grades 10 thru 12.

N.H.S. - National Honor Society

The membership of the National Honor Society is open to juniors and seniors who must meet the criteria for selection set by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service are attributes evaluated in the induction process. Members are required to participate in both school and community service.

Nature/Hiking Club

This club provides a fun and safe environment in which students can not only learn about but also experience the beauty of the natural environment in our community and surrounding areas.

Philosophy Club

The club hopes to explore a wide array of philosophical topics and engage members in philosophical discussions and debates. Building critical thinking skills and communication skills are key areas addressed in the club. Members will be able to read and view philosophical theories and concepts to engage in meaningful discussions and debates.

Phoenix Literary Magazine / Creative Writing Club

This organization provides students who have an interest in prose and poetry writing, visual art, and photography with a safe space to hone their craft and have their work showcased. Students will have the opportunity to receive both peer and teacher feedback on their work with the ultimate goal of compiling/publishing a student literary magazine. Students will have the opportunity to submit their work to school and other print and online publications and contests as the opportunities arise.

Ping Pong Club

The mission of this club is to provide a fun, friendly, and enjoyable environment that is conducive to learning the way that table tennis is meant to be played while fostering the development of fundamental skills. Students are afforded the opportunity to participate in this alternative extracurricular activity.

F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Club

The mission of the club is to inspire students to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in an exciting mentor-based program that builds science, engineering and technology skills that inspire innovation and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. S.A.D.D. - Students Against Destructive Decisions

This organization conducts several activities to help students avoid the use of drinking and drugs. Discouraging drunk driving is just one of the many endeavors that the club looks to combat. The club is open to all students. Fundraising helps support the costs associated with club projects.

Science Fiction Club

This club plans to meet on a regular basis to discuss favorite movies, TV shows and literary works in the Science Fiction genre. The club is available to all students interested in the genre.

Lakeland Service Club

The goal of the Service Club would be to give students the opportunity to participate in community service projects. Club members would be responsible for the creation, planning and implementation of the projects. The club will be open to all students interested in community service both at school and in the broader sense. Members are required to attend planning meetings as well as to volunteer for a minimum number of service nights or events.

Spanish Honor Society

The mission of the Sociedad Honaria Hispanica is to recognize high school student achievement in Spanish and Portuguese and to promote an interest in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Culture.

Student Advocacy Club

This club is designed to promote student advocacy and leadership skills in students who lack the confidence, or knowledge to advocate for their own special needs. The club’s intention is for students to recognize their academic, behavioral, physical or social-emotional challenges and turn those challenges into a driving force towards self-improvements and rising above their adversities. Students are first guided towards how they can advocate for their needs while in class and in school. As students move towards graduation, they learn how to apply these skills during job interviews, in college essays, and when advocating at the college level. Students develop skills within a safe, yet competitive environment, and those skills can be transferred into real life and future career choices.

S.W.A.P. - Speak with a Peer

This club serves as a peer helper organization. Members are seen as “natural helpers” who are provided with intensive training in active listening, and helping skills to enable them to assist peers in addressing problems more effectively. Members learn about themselves through a variety of self- awareness experiences. The training culminates in an overnight retreat. S.W.A.P. members assist in ninth grade orientation and student transfer orientation. This organization works with middle school peer assistance groups and form the backbone of the peer mediation program. Members have also made presentations to parent groups on addressing teenage problems and concerns. The focus of the club is to help fellow peers when problems arise.

Student Council

The Student Council is an extracurricular school based government organization run by student elected officials. The Student Council acts as a bridge between students and the faculty/administration. Ideas and concerns are shared to help organize school-wide events fundraisers and programs. The club helps teach students about government and helps them develop leadership skills. Student Council is responsible for events like: Homecoming, Blood Drive, assisting at the snack stand during sporting events, Pep Rally’s, Spirit Week, various fundraisers, food drives, and toy drives. They are also responsible for promoting and enhancing school spirit and improving school climate, initiating new ideas and running community based activities.

Tri-M Music Honor Society

This organization is the international music honor society for junior and senior high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements and reward them for their accomplishments and service activities. It is to applaud the efforts of students who bring music to the community and inspire other students to excel at music and leadership.

Video Club

Lakeland Video Club offers an opportunity to explore all areas of video production beyond what is possible in the classroom, including both television production and short film production. Students have the ability to work in all phases of the production process, both individually and collaboratively. Completed videos may be showcased in local film festivals and the Lakeland film festival.

Yearbook Staff

Members of this literary staff create the annual yearbook and oversee its production from conception through distribution. Business staff members handle the financial efforts involved in the creation and publication of the yearbook including advertising and content.

Yoga Club

Students are faced with an increasing demand on their time. These demands in turn increase stress levels, which in turn diminishes their ability to perform in an academic environment. We have observed many of our students having difficulty managing their daily stress of academics and extracurricular activities. As we look to the future, we see and increased demands of the time of our students and this increases levels of stress. Studies have shown that stress will significantly decrease the quality of life in terms of health and life span. Other students have shown that the practice of yoga can greatly reduce stress. By providing yoga instruction, students will have in place a means of coping with increased stress as they pursue both their academic and personal lives.
